how you feel about that?

I'm also one of those ignorant people who at first had no idea why there was such a big deal over the pope's death. But it seems like there are plenty of reports nowadays describing his contributions to politics and religion.

I couldn't have said it better myself. He is definitely someone who deserves more respect than the crass comments and jokes that I've heard, no matter what the difference in political beliefs.

The day he died, I had just turned on my car and the stereo was on "La Preciosa" an old-school Mexican music station, when they interrupted the song to bring the news, I went back inside the house and told my family. We said a Padre Nuestro, and spent the rest of the day in a somber mood in his honor. The bells of the local church rang every hour in his honor. He was the only pope I have had in my lifetime. My first memory will be that movie with Andres Garcia and the little boy when his holyness visits Mexico and they greet him with the "Amigo" song. I hope that the next pope can carry on his legacy of unity amongst the different religions of the world.

as i was doing the washing up, i thought to email you a few questions about this. i was hoping you would write something about the pope and your relationship with him as a catholic chicana. i wanted to know what relevancy he held in your life...? i guess i am asking, if you care to, to share more about your feelings on the pope. i'd be really interested to read them.

I feel the same way. Don't think I could have said it any differently. Regardless of other faiths, he deserves to be commemorated for being a great champion of Humanity. People who make crass remarks piss me off too...I just don't think they will ever understand the depth that was Pope John Paul II.

Sigh of relief! I thought I was the overrated writer that offended you! Seriously, though, I don't know why I was hit as hard as i was with the Pope's passing, but it sure hit me hard, too.

Ughh. I've been putting off writing about the Pope. Good post.

Nebur, you definitely were not the overrated writer. Heh.

Tank, it might take me a little while to get around to it considering I'm now busy with school. Also, some of what I write about being a Catholic Chicana might border on the too personal for this blog. However, I'll see what I can write.

C.: Mi ms sentido psame for your loss. My husband and I have strayed away from Catholicism b/c we believe in gender equality. When the first Catholic female priest is ordained, we may reconsider. Also, male priests should be free to marry. Think about it, it's 2005 now, not 1955.

Like Wooj, I'm also in the dark about why Juanita says: "he deserves to be commemorated for being a great champion of Humanity." It seems to me that there are many people in the history of our little planet who are underrecognized champions of humanity, but I just don't know enough about what the Pope has done (at least positively) to comprehend how he is one of them. In fact, it's kinda weird. The only thing that on the television here in Mexico has been about the Pope and yet not once have they really gone through his life and all the great things he did. Same with the blogosphere ... I see mourning all over all the place, everyone talking about what a wonderful man he was and I feel like there's a big secret that everyone is keeping from me. Anyway, I hope that if either Moreno or I disappointed you as your overrated writer that we can at least continue to be friend.

Oso, I understand what you mean, but honestly, I'm not the best person to tell you about everything the Pope did. Anyway, neither you nor Moreno offended me and neither one of you is overrated by any means. We're still friends.
