you gotta have it

I never mentioned the right answer to which of the ten Chicana grad student must haves did not apply to me. No one guessed the right answer.

10. I do indeed have fantasies involving Gael, soccer players, mariachis (those pants!) and Salma (hey, heterosexual women can like her too). (Note: mariachi photo, thanks to Indieman)

9. I don't have a subscription to Latina or People en Espaol, but Isa has a subscription to another celebrity rag, Us Weekly. Yes, I read it. I need a good laugh.

8. I definitely have the Spanish/English dictionary. I can't get through novels from South America without looking up about one word per page.

You can read, right? 7. I have a complex about not looking Mexican enough. It's fueled by comments like "what happened to Cindy? Why is she so light" or "Cindy, are you sick" or "You don't look Mexican. You look more Asian. I'd say Japanese [or Filipina]." Because of this, I tend to buy tshirts which sorta overcompensate. I'm sure many of you have seen the red bsame one in gravatars. In case you're wondering if it works, well... I'll keep that to my self.

Books and stuff 6. Of course I have a mini Chicana/o Studies library. I was a Chicana/o Studies major! It would be a sin to not have certain books on my bookshelf (read: Borderlands/La Frontera). I don't have enough room in my book shelf for any of my education related books. I think I need to do some cleaning and organizing of Cindylu Library.

5. Yeah, we have chocolate too. I think we have Ibarra in stock next to the tea and coffee. We don't really drink warm stuff during the summer, though.

Tap-tap 4. I don't have Cholula o Tapato chile in my 'fridge at all times. I'm one of those rare Mexicans who doesn't really like her food too picante. In Mexico my uncles kept asking me, "ya te enchilaste?" I think they got a kick out of the fact that I had a very low tolerance for something that they can eat tons of without having a fit.

Mayan tapestry 3. I bought this at a pow wow last year. It's currently up on my wall and I still really want my room to be decorated in these colors even though my two favorite colors are red and black. The only thing in my room that currently matches this are my new turquoise sheets and the Purple Monster (a giant pilow).

Virgen de Guadalupe prayer candle 2. I have both images of La Virgen de Guadalupe and Frida Kahlo up in my apartment. There is no way to escape it. We're very Chicana chic here at la Casa de las Tiranas. Although I enjoy Frida's art and find her life fascinating, I still think way too many Chicanas are obsessed with Frida. I find it funny, and poked fun at that phenomenon with this banner. Check out the Institute for the Frida Kahlo Obsessed.

1. Sure, I have a blog where I write down a lot of my thoughts, but a lot of what I think (and write) never gets posted here. Some goes in the "random thoughts notebook" which is small, black and has a cool sticker on the cover.

I'm thinking if I replaced Tapato/Cholula with an item that Chicana grad students must have, it would have to be rock en espaol CD's, mp3's or the occasional concert tickets.
