I'm in one of those moods. A list will have to do.
- I officially began my duty as the Vice President of External Affairs yesterday. I read an oath from a greasy piece of paper saying I'll represent graduate students. I wasn't too excited about it. I'm now on a conference call with the UC Students Association. Fun times.
- My wrist still hurts. I found my brace at my parent's house. I really need to get this checked out... after finals.
- I decided today that I'm going to graduate. Well, that I will participate in the GSEIS graduation ceremony since I'm earning my MA. I asked my dad if he thought I should go through the ceremony or not. "Yeah, I think you should. It's a milestone, right?" Yeah... it's a milestone. Plus, my roommates and ex-roommate are graduating from their Master's programs in education/teaching and social welfare.
- The short week and being in San Diego for the first couple of days have kinda thrown me off. I haven't been able to get back into the swing of things.
- The only reading I've been doing lately (aside from blogs) is fiction and [of course] not related to my coursework or papers. I just finished reading Gonzalez and Daughter Trucking Co. : A Road Novel with Literary License by Mara Amparo Escandn. If I want to procrastinate on papers even more, I might start reading Woodcuts of Women: Stories by Dagoberto Gilb.
- Ome, the ex-roommate, presented her inquiry (basically, a Master's thesis) today. I went with her because she was asked to take a guest. I learned a lot in the presentations. She's gotten through her first year of teaching, even if it was at Jefferson High School where there have been a handful of huge brawls between black and Latino students. Her comment? Things are crazy there.
- I read something on problems graduate students have. One of the chapters was on mental health issues. Needless to say, I didn't feel too good while reading this stuff.
- I woke up from a rather scary and disturbing dream on Wednesday morning. The Dodgers had been swept in the three game series against the Chicago Cubs. The score of the third game was 11-2. I calmed down once I realized that the third game wouldn't even begin until 7:10 that night. The Dodgers lost anyway. Meh. I hate when my dreams come true.
- I was really glad I got to spend sometime at home this past weekend. My dad shaved off his mustache which he's had FOREVER. It's strange to see someone you've seen almost daily your entire life suddenly change his look slightly. He looks younger now.
- Miranda Massie, the lead counsel for the student interveners (BAMN) in the Grutter v. Bollinger case spoke to my class yesterday. The case on the legality of affirmative action was argued in conjunction with the Gratz v. Bollinger case and decided by the Supreme Court in 2003. Massie assured our class that without the work of my professor and another UCLA department of education professor, the student interveners and University of Michigan would have lost the fight for affirmative action. One of the key things I took away from the talk was that affirmative action in higher education is not about taking race into account. Rather, it's taking racism into account.
That's all, folks.
