i'm leaving this place

I don't think I'm going to miss this place much. My office is finally moving out of the cramped space we're in to our "new" offices.

I've been placing files, supplies and other materials in boxes all day. the other directors have been doing the same, so by now there are a few dozen bozes stacked on eachother like blocks making up a fort. The walkways are even narrower and there is more trash than usual on the floor. I guess this is the way it gets when you move.

Moving out of the Kerckhoff is like moving out of the dorms after your second year. You're going to return home for the summer - or longer - to a place you know much better. Kerckhoff was always meant to be temporary while the Men's Gym got a much needed face lift. Back in 2001 before we moved, the walls had cracks all over them, the basement was uninhabitable due to the rats and asbetos, an earthquake would've sent the brick building crashing to the ground, and the offices were inaccessible to disabled students. Men's Gym, renamed the Student Activities Center, is much prettier now.

There are no cracks on the walls or asbestos in the basement. The furniture is all new and matches. The offices are more spacious and the windows have a better view. It's much nicer.

It's going to be odd trying to explain to new students how these offices were founded... with blood, sweat and tears. It's always been about a struggle and the CPO embodied that. You could feel that the CPO with it's shabby cubicle walls and torn couches was the place for students of color on campus... like a ghetto.

That feeling is gone, but I still can't wait to go back. I've missed being in an office with windows.
