Spring quarter has begun, and I can safely say that I'm not too thrilled about it. Reasons... (yeah, I know, another list...):
- Classes. I may only have three classes to take this quarter, which is an improvement from last quarter. However, the amount I need to read has more than doubled (see picture above... that's for two classes).
- Exam. In approximately one month I'll have to take my Diagnostic and Advisement Procedure (DAP) exam. Truthfully, I'm not too worried about it, because it's only two six-page papers and I get a three-day weekend to write them. Plus, I've been preparing for them all year long through my core courses. Still, the other students in my program make me worry since they're worried.
- Conference. I'm kinda nervous about co-presenting two papers at a conference in late May in San Diego. One paper is on preparation of underrepresented first year students in biomedical and behavioral sciences. The second paper is on postive interactions across race for college students at public institutions. It's a great opportunity for a first year, but I'm nervous!
- New admits. Spring quarter also means that admitted higher ed students will be accepting (or declining) their admission decision to the program. Eight admitted students were assigned my advisor. Eight! Currently, I am this superstar professor's only advisee. I don't want to share, but I guess I'll have to. On a more serious note, I'll have to share more than just attention (not that I get much...), but I'll also have to share resources.
- Solidifying summer plans. By now I should know if I will have a job at HERI or not during the summer. However, like the true lagger I am, I don't know.
- Elections. I'm running for a student government position. It seems like I didn't get enough of it the first time around.
- Air conditioning. This past week it's come to my attention that the building where I work and have most of my classes (Moore Hall) does not have air conditioning. It's hot! This isn't going to be fun. Also, it's not fun having class on such a nice day when other students are lounging around outside working on their tans.
- Baseball. Yeah, I love it, but I'm going to feel guilty for paying more attention to games (like I did tonight) than to my studies.
- Graduation. Lots of people I'm good friends with are graduating this spring. That means I have to go to parties and get gifts and stuff. Meh. That's what you gotta do when you're all for increasing graduation rates (and admit too) of Chicana/o and Latina/o students.
Despite all this, there are plenty of things I like about spring quarter at UCLA. There are lots of great free events like the JazzReggae Festival, 20th annual Pow Wow, and the Festival Latino. Oh yeah, how could I forget the LA Times Festival of Books. Ooooh, now I'm looking forward to spring quarter.
